Frequently Asked Questions
- How do I schedule a new task? To schedule a new task, just follow the below steps:
1. On the "Main" tab where the "Task Grid" is visible, select the "New Task" option under the "File" menu at the top of the form.
2. The "Task Wizard" will now be visible. The Wizard will walk you each step required to add a new task to QueIt.
3. On the first page of the Wizard, select the type of task you wish to schedule. You have the option of scheduling an automated reminder or a standard program (e.g. .exe, .bat, or .com file).
4. If you selected "Program" from the first Wizard screen and clicked the "Next" button, you will now be on the "Task Location" screen of the Wizard. Here is where you enter in the full path to the program you wish to schedule. For example, if you wished to schedule Microsoft Excel and Excel is located in the c:\apps\excel directory, you would enter in c:\apps\excel\excel.exe into this textbox. If you don't recall where the program is located, you can select the browse button next to the textbox to help you locate the program you wish to schedule.
5. If you wish to execute your task on a remote computer (i.e. a computer different from the one QueIt is installed on) then click the "Execute task on remote machine" checkbox under the "Network Options" tab. Note, in order to execute tasks on a remote machine, you will need to have the QueServer add-on installed on that remote machine. You can download the add-on from http://www.vandaveer.com/queit/qs.htm. Once QueServer is installed, it will "listen" for instructions from QueIt to execute tasks locally on the machine QueServer is installed on by using the CPU of that machine and not the machine QueIt is installed on.
By installing QueServer on several machines, you are able to distribute the processing of multiple tasks across multiple machines and are only required to have one install of QueIt that sends instructions to the remote machines that have QueServer installed on.
6. After you have clicked the "Next" button on the "Location" screen you will now be on the "Schedule" screen of the Wizard. This screen is where you enter in the time you wish to execute your task and how often you wish to run your task. If you wish to exclude certain dates (e.g. holidays) from your schedule, you may click the "Skip Dates Contained in Holiday File" checkbox. You can add your own custom dates to the holiday schedule by clicking the "Edit Holiday File" button.
7. After you have clicked the "Next" button on the "Schedule" screen you will now be on the "Conditions" screen of the Wizard. If you wish to schedule a task that executes ONLY if a file exists, check the "Execute Task Only If File(s) Exists" checkbox and then enter the full path of the file or files that must exist. Separate multiple files by a space. For example, if you want to launch Microsoft Excel ONLY if a file by the name of "c:\temp\today.txt" exists, you would enter in "c:\temp\today.txt" into the textbox without the quotes. If you wish to send command line arguments to the program or task that is being launched, select the "Command Line Arguments" checkbox
and then enter in each command line argument. Separate multiple arguments by a space. If you wish to stop a program or task that has been launched by QueIt after a specified number of hours or minutes, select the "Stop Task After" checkbox and then select the number of hours or minutes you want QueIt to wait before stopping the task.
8. After you have clicked the "Next" button on the "Conditions" screen you will now be on the "Email Options" screen of the Wizard. If you wish to send an email message to an email address after the task has been launched, check the "Send Email When
Task is Launched" checkbox and then type in the message you wish to be sent. For example, "Task 1 has been launched". Next, type in the email address the message should be sent to. Separate multiple email addresses by a space. For example, john@home.com stan@aol.com. If you wish to send an email message to an
email address after the task has completed, check the "Send Email When Task is Complete" checkbox and then complete the "Email Message" and "To Email Address" fields. Separate multiple email addresses by a space. For example, john@home.com stan@aol.com.PLEASE NOTE, IN ORDER TO USE THE EMAIL OPTIONS, YOU MUST FIRST
CONFIGURE QUEIT TO YOUR EMAIL SERVER. YOU CAN DO THIS BY SELECTING "EMAIL SERVER SETTINGS" UNDER THE "OPTIONS" MENU AT THE TOP OF YOUR SCREEN.
9. To finish adding your task to QueIt, click the "Finished" button on the "Email Options" screen.
- How do I edit an existing task?
To edit a task, click the task you wish to edit with your mouse on the "Task Grid" and then select the "Edit Task" option
under the "Edit" menu located at the top of QueIt's main page. You can also edit a task by double clicking the task you wish to
edit on the "Task Grid" which is located on the "Main" tab. Once you are in edit mode, you should
see the all of the details of your task (e.g. start time, start date, etc.). Simply change the
value of item you want to change. For example, if you currently have the task scheduled as a
daily task, but you want to skip Fridays, you would uncheck the "Fri" checkbox.
Once you have made your changes, click the "Apply Settings" button at the bottom of your screen.
PLEASE NOTE, IN ORDER FOR YOUR SETTING TO TAKE EFFECT, YOU MUST SAVE YOUR SETTINGS. Once your settings have
been saved, you can minimize QueIt. When QueIt is minimized, it will reside in your system tray and will
launch any scheduled tasks at their scheduled time.

- How do I install the QueServer add-on?
With QueIt you have the ability to execute tasks on remote machines (i.e. a machines other than the one QueIt
is installed on). In order to execute tasks on a remote machine, you will need to install QueServer
on each machine you wish to execute remote tasks on. You can download QueServer from
http://www.vandaveer.com/queit/qs.htm.
To install QueServer, double click the qs_setup.exe file you downloaded from the link above and then follow
the QueServer setup instructions provided by the setup wizard.
After you have successfully installed the QueServer add-on, launch the executable from your Start Menu.
If you installed QueServer on a machine running Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000 or Windows XP, you will
be prompted to install QueServer as a service. If you select yes, QueServer will run as a Window service
and you will not be required to be logged on to your system in order for tasks to be executed
remotely from QueIt and QueServer will automatically start when your computer is rebooted. The
service is installed under the local System account and so if you wish to change the "Log On As" value
in the Window Services Applet, open the Window Services Applet by selecting "Services" from the
"Administrative Tools" under Windows Control Panel. If you are not familiar with
running programs as a service, please consult with you network administrator prior to installing the service.
If you do not wish to install the service, you may minimize QueServer and it will reside as an icon in
your system tray. However, if you log off, QueServer will not be able to accept remote
instructions and if you reboot your machine, you will be required to restart QueServer manually.
When QueServer is running as a service, you will not see the QueServer icon, however it will be able to accept
remote instructions from the machine QueServer is installed on. Also, if you changed the "Log On As"
user under Windows Services Applet to something other than the Local System account, your task
will not be visible when it is running since Windows prevents these types of services from
interacting with the desktop.
If QueServer is running as a service and the task you wish to execute is not stored on the same machine QueServer
is installed on (e.g. network drive), the user that the Service is running under must have
access to the program on the network. Also, when running as a service, you cannot use mapped drives.
You must specify the full UNC path to the executable (e.g. \\server-name\apps\my_program.exe).
PLEASE NOTE, IN ORDER FOR QUEIT TO EXECUTE TASKS ON A REMOTE MACHINE, PORTS 1002 AND 1003 MUST BE
OPEN ON THE MACHINES QUEIT AND QUESERVER ARE INSTALLED ON. IF YOU ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH RUNNING PROGRAMS
AS A SERVICE OR ARE UNFAMILIAR WITH PORTS, PLEASE CONSULT WITH YOUR NETWORK ADMINISTRATOR PRIOR TO
INSTALLING QUESERVER.
- How do I run QueIt as a Windows Service?
If you installed QueIt on a machine running Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000 or Windows XP, you can set
up QueIt to run as a Windows service. Running QueIt as a service allows you to schedule
tasks to execute even when you are not logged onto your computer. Installing the service
will also allow QueIt to automatically start when your computer is rebooted.
To install QueIt as a service, select "Install QueIt as a Windows Service" from the "Options" menu at
the top of your screen. Please note you must have administrator rights when installing the QueIt
service. The service is installed under the Local System account and therefore if QueIt needs
to execute tasks located on a machine other than the one QueIt is installed on, you will need
to change the "Log On As" user under the Windows Services Applet to a user that has appropriate
network rights. To change the "Log On As" value open the Window Services Applet by selecting
"Services" from the "Administrative Tools" under Windows Control Panel. If you are not familiar
with running programs as a service, please consult with you network administrator prior to
installing the service.
If you do change the "Log On As" user under Windows Services Applet to something other than the Local
System account, your task will not be visible when it is running since Windows prevents these
types of services from interacting with the desktop.
If QueIt is running as a service and the task you wish to execute is not stored on the same machine
QueIt is installed on (e.g. network drive), the user that the Service is running under must have
access to the program on the network. Also, when running as a service, you cannot use mapped drives.
You must specify the full UNC path to the executable (e.g. \\server-name\apps\my_program.exe).
Please note that QueIt cannot be installed as a service if you are running Windows 95 or Windows 98. You can,
however, still run QueIt on startup by selecting the "Launch QueIt When Computer Starts" from the "Options" menu.
